Labour are remaining tight-lipped over the specific reasons for the Mayor of Haringey’s disciplinary hearing last week.

Mayor Sheila Peacock was found guilty of abusing her position for personal gain by sending emails regarding personal matters using her mayoral title.

She was officially censured by an independent standards committee, which found she had brought the office of the mayor into disrepute.

But the Labour group has since refused to divulge details of what the emails concerned, whilst Haringey Council insists it is unable to make public any more information on the private hearing.

The Haringey Independent last week submitted a Freedom of Information request asking for details of the standards breach by Mayor Peacock, who has since issued an apology.

Liberal Democrat group leader Richard Wilson, who last week called on the mayor to resign, says the public deserve to know what she did.

He said: “It is not clear what has happened and the public have a right to know what their elected representatives are up to and why she has been censured.

“There should be more clarity – it doesn’t look good on the council in terms of openness and honesty.

“I think it reflects badly on the judgement of the Labour leader Claire Kober, who put Cllr Peacock forward and gave her a glowing review in a speech in front of the full council.

“She already had a reputation for not behaving correctly in her role or conducting herself in the best manner.”
