Hornsey Bowling Club needs public votes to secure £25,000 grant from Engage Mutual insurance company
A bowling club that dates back more than a century is in the running for a £25,000 grant which members hope will secure its future for another 100 years.
Hornsey Bowling Club, in Rectory Gardens, needs public votes to secure the cash, needed to repair its clubhouse, restore its bowling greens and attract new members.
The club, which was founded in 1908, is one of 80 organisations in the running for funding from the charitable arm of insurance company Engage Mutual.
An online competition ends later this month, and the group with the most votes will be handed the cash.
Club member Cyril Meadows believes the renovations would attract more members and allow the club to put on more activities and remain open in winter months.
He said: “It would transform the future of the club. The clubhouse is looking a bit worse for wear and it needs some work.
“It would be fantastic and would make a big difference to the local community.”
A local amateur football team currently holds its meetings in the clubhouse, and members hope the grant would allow the club to build a five-a-side football pitch on a small patch of ground attached to the club.
Committee members have been raising money to carry out ongoing repairs to the leaking roof on an ad-hoc basis, but Mr Meadows is optimistic the club can obtain the grant to carry out all of the refurbishments at once.
The club is also determined to attract young people to use the “wonderful sporting facility”.
It shares a close link with nearby St Mary’s C of E Junior School and Mr Meadows hopes that, as developments on the ground further, the club will be able to open its facilities to pupils and strengthen its links.
Mr Meadows said: "I feel very excited about the future of the club, particularly because we have so many young people showing an interest. Things are looking very positive."
