We now have all of the results in: all councillors are Labour, with 9 Liberal Democrats. Not among them are Liberal Democrat leader Richard Wilson, who lost his Stroud Green seat, along with his deputy leader, Katherine Reece.

Haringey Mayor Sheila Peacock, who was recently censured by the council's standards committee for abusing her position and bringing the mayor's office into disrepute, said on retaining her seat with the highest number of votes in Northumberland Park ward: "I was worried about how voters would react but all my people know me and told me they knew it wasn't true (Mayor Peacock actually issued a public apology at the time).

"I think they are absolutely wonderful and I'm so pleased - it makes me feel good. They say I'm a genuine person who works hard for the borough."

Asked if she would be keeping her head down in her next term given the recent controversy, she added: "No, I'll just continue to be myself."

MP Lynne Featherstone told the BBC earlier this evening that the Lib Dems had lost some of their "humanity".

She said: "For the Lib Dems, we are the whipping boys in the coalition. Personally I think we are the good guys and history will recognise this, but possibly not tonight. We're getting kicking for being in the coalition."

Will her words prove true in Haringey?

So the top three scoring wards by turn-out are Alexandra, where Green party candidate Lucy Craig is hoping to win a seat, Stroud Green, currently held by Liberal Democrat leader Cllr Richard Wilson, and Hornsey. Crouch End is not far behind.

Just waiting for Hornsey now. Crouch End scored 43.78 percent and Stroud Green a respectable 45.85 percent.

Vote counting has yet to begin. All the work so far has gone into verifying turn-out.

Councillor Demirci on the election count: "There is buzz about the place, but we're all so tired as well. We've been up since 4am and have covered 20-30 miles on foot, delivering leaflets and door-knocking."

1:15am

Labour councillor for Bounds Green, Ali Demirci, is confident his party will strengthen its hold on the council and increase its majority over the Lib Dems.

He said: "The Lib Dems haven't got anything to offer Haringey. It has been negative campaigning from them and I think people are seeing through it.

"I wouldn't be surprised if the Green Party gets a big swing of Lib Dem votes. We haven't been complacent though, and it's not over 'til the fat lady sings."
