Tottenham MP David Lammy hailed Labour’s landslide victory over the Liberal Democrats as “the best result since I became an MP”.
Haringey Borough Council's Labour group took 12 seats off the opposition, crushing the Liberal Democrats' numbers in opposition.
Speaking after the result, the Labour MP said: “This is probably the best result I have seen for Labour since I became an MP 14 years ago – it is huge.
“It is a huge swing away from the Lib Dems, who ran a very negative campaign, and I think they were taking the population of Haringey for fools. I think voters realise the role the Lib Dems have played in this election, and they’ve been punished for that.
“What is fantastic and emotional for me is seeing the young crop of new Labour candidates. This is a real moment for Haringey and one I’m excited about.
“After this negative campaign, the Lib Dems are left in a very bad place and I think you just need to look at (Liberal Democrat Hornsey and Wood Green MP) Lynne Featherstone’s face to see that.”
