The FA Cup arrived in Tottenham as part of a football event put on by primary schools in the area to mark the start of the World Cup.

Pupils from five schools travelled to St Francis de Sales Junior School, in Church Road, to see the famous trophy and play in a World Cup themed 5-a-side football competition.

Kevin Coleman from the Football Association said: "We’re very pleased to be working with the schools in Tottenham on this exciting occasion of the World Cup 2014 and also pleased to see so many girls and boys competing in this event."

The children, wearing football jerseys, scarves and flags, posed for pictures with the cup, which Spurs last won in 1991.

Dal Babu, who arranges community activities for Tottenham schools, said: “Tottenham is an area that is very challenged and it’s nice for the children here to have the opportunity to see the FA Cup.

“They wouldn’t have access otherwise and even match tickets are expensive. They have been ecstatic, very excited, all morning.”

The event is part of Sports Week, Mr Babu explained, a scheme to encourage kids to play sport of all kinds.

He added: “The FA cup is really the icing on the cake.  These kids are football mad.”

After getting their pictures taken with the cup, the teams played six-minute games on an outside court at the Tottenham Sports Centre.

Nell Swinhoe, aged 9, a football fan from Weston Park Primary School, said: “I’m just really excited because I’m playing in the match and I got to see the FA Cup. I’m very confident our team is going to win.”
