Secondary school named best in London
A Haringey school has been named the best secondary school in London.
St Thomas More School in Wood Green, was presented with an award by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg at the 2014 Pupil Premium Awards.
The Glendale Avenue school was praised for closing the attainment gap between children from families of different income brackets.
Martin Tissot, executive headteacher of the school, said: “To be named the top school in London is a reflection of the hard work put in by both staff and pupils over the past academic year".
He added: “Pupils have committed themselves to extra sessions every day after school and pupils from all year groups volunteer to come in every Saturday to receive one to one tutoring in literacy and numeracy."
Mr Clegg said that St Thomas More was doing “fantastic work”.
According to research cited by the Liberal Democrats, children from low-income families are estimated to already be 19 months behind more advantaged peers when they start school.
