The end of Harringay Market: 'It was a dream'

The founder of a market says the decision to close it was “difficult”.

Harringay Market, founded by Jessica Voss, will open for the final time this Sunday.

Stallholders have traded at South Harringay School, in Mattison Road, every weekend for three years, but the school can no longer host them due to building work on the playground.

Ms Voss said that as the market could not leave the area without losing its character, she took the decision to close it.

She said: “It was a difficult decision. When I started it three years ago I couldn’t imagine how it would grow or how people would love it. I want it to stop on a high.

“It’s been a real project and I’ve loved it. I hope people have enjoyed it as much as I have.”

However, Ms Voss said that running the market has not always been easy.

She said: “Everybody knows it’s been a challenge. I totally underestimated the work it would involve.

“When I began, I wanted to create a place where locals could meet each other and enjoy some good food. I know there’s a lot of good food on Green Lanes already, and I love all of that, but I wanted to offer something different.

“I’m really passionate about British farmers and seasonal food, I guess. I visited other markets in London and just thought – there’s nothing like that here. It was just a dream.”

Harringay Market will be in its usual place at South Harringay School, Mattison Road, this Sunday between 11am and 3pm.
