Harringay could be the home of an orbital railway station under new plans revealed by London’s transport authorities.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson has launched a new consultation on the 2050 London Infrastructure Plan.

The plan suggests an orbital railway would alleviate transport pressures caused by the city's growing population.

The railway, which would pass through Harringay, is not currently accounted for in the plan’s budget, but is described as “an indicative network” for the “longer term”.

Councillor Claire Kober, leader of Haringey Council, welcomed the investment and called for greater devolvement of power from Whitehall to London government on transport issues.

Cllr Kober, who is London Councils lead member for infrastructure and regeneration, said: "London Councils welcomes the start of a debate about London’s long term infrastructure needs.

“With the challenge of continued population growth, infrastructure investment needs to ensure that London remains both a competitive world city and a liveable one for all its different communities.”

Mr Johnson described his plan as “a real wake-up call to the stark needs that face London over the next half a century”.

London’s population is forecast to increase by 37 per cent over the next 50 years.
