Free lunches will be served to emphasise how much food is wasted each year.

Around 1,000 lunches will be on offer in Tottenham Green on Sunday between 10.30am and 1.30pm. The budget for ingredients is £680, which is the estimated amount of food that the average family throws away each year.

The event is the last in the Waste Less, Lunch Free series, which has seen several similar events held across north London. Organised by North London Waste Authority and Keep Britain Tidy, the day will also include cooking demonstrations, information from waste prevention experts and freebies to help reduce food waste and save money.

Leytonstone Councillor Clyde Loakes, Chair of NLWA, said: “After seeing what can be repaired, reused or eaten, people might think twice next time they go to throw something in the bin.”
