The two political parties sitting in the council chamber have named their candidates for the Woodside by-election next month.

Labour has selected Charles Wright, who previously stood in the Alexandra ward, the Liberal Democrats have chosen Dawn Barnes, who stood in Hornsey.

The Woodside seat became available following the death of long-standing councillor Pat Egan.

Mr Wright, who is the chair of the Hornsey and Wood Green  Labour party, said: “Pat Egan was hugely respected in Woodside. I’m sure none of us would have wanted this by-election in these sad circumstances. I’m humbled to have been chosen to try and fill Pat’s shoes.

“I’ve lived in Haringey for 20 years. I’m committed to making a difference and getting things done, and I’m experienced particularly in education and improving results and opportunities for our young people.”

Ms Barnes previously worked as a communications manager for a national charity, and stood as a parliamentary candidate against David Cameron in 2010.

Lib Dem MP Lynne Featherstone said:  “I am delighted to have Dawn as our candidate. Dawn is an incredibly hard-working local campaigner.

“She has already campaigned on local issues such as fly-tipping and the pond in White Hart Lane Rec, and she is the best person to represent the residents of Woodside.”

The Conservative Party have also confirmed they will be putting forward a candidate.
