Hundreds joined a march through the streets of Tottenham as part of the final leg of a 300 mile protest.

The group of mothers and other campaigners marched from Darlington in protest at the privatisation of health service.

The People’s March, which began in mid-August, has followed in the footsteps of the 1936 Jarrow Crusade.

The group were joined by protesters in Tottenham as they made their way from Edmonton to Trafalgar Square in central London for a mass rally.

Icarus Williams, who walked the entire 300-mile route, said: “The support we have had along the way has been amazing.

“No matter where we went and the kind of constituency we were in, people were out showing us their support.

“We’re doing this became we want to preserve our NHS. Universal healthcare is a right and the coalition government cannot just take that away.

“It is in the national interest for this country to keep the NHS as it is, and not cut it.

“The whole experience has been fantastic and after we finish today if someone was to ask me to do it again, I would say yes straight away.”

With chants of “NHS not for sale” and “Whose NHS? Our NHS”, the group made its way down Tottenham High Road with cars and trucks sounding their horns in support.

According to the Department of Health the use of the private sector in the NHS represents only six per cent of the total NHS budget, which is an increase of one per cent since May 2010.
