A teaching union has said it will try to hold talks with Haringey Council ahead of a scheduled court hearing next month.

London NUT says it wants to meet with Haringey Council to discuss the suspension of Haringey NUT secretary Julie Davies.

Both parties will meet in the Royal Courts of Justice in early October for a two-day hearing regarding the case.

NUT London regional secretary Bob Stapley said: “At the heart of this is an attempt by Haringey Council to deny effective representation for trade union members. Both the basis for the suspension and the so-called charges themselves are trivial.

“Our requests to meet with the council chief executive to resolve this, and the broader question of anti-trade union attitudes and actions, have been ignored until now.”

Haringey NUT deputy secretary Niall O’Connor said: “NUT members will be meeting in the weeks ahead to decide on action to defend our right to be represented – it’s called democracy.”

Haringey Council declined to comment on whether it would meet with the union ahead of October’s hearing.

A Haringey Council spokesperson said: “We do not comment on matters involving individual staff members.”
