Haringey Borough Council is spending more than £20,000 per day on consultants, with one senior council officer earning £1,050 per day, figures reveal.

Labour councillors are said to be unhappy with the amount, and have called for a debate asking the council to ensure senior staff are all directly on the council’s payroll.

A list of 37 consultants not directly employed by the council reveals they are currently paid daily rates ranging from £245 to £1,050 a day.

The list can be found in the June 2014 minutes of the council's corporate committee.

Although none of the consultants are named, the job description and employment start date of the person receiving the £1,050 matches the role of Interim Chief Operating Officer.

The Independent has asked Haringey Council to confirm that the consultant “providing Interim support to shape the new Chief Operating Officer role” is the Interim Chief Operating Officer, a post currently filled by Tracie Evans.

Ms Evans is currently responsible for finances, human resources, IT, customer service, environmental services and community safety. The only more senior officer is the chief executive, whose listed starting salary was listed as £189,440 in 2012.

The Independent reported last week that Ms Evans was reprimanded by a professional standards body last month for forging a signature on altered accounts in January 2012.

Haringey Council has declined to comment on the why there is a high salary for the role, or on why the role cannot be filled by a council employee.

A council spokesman said: “Like any large organisation, the council sometimes uses specialist staff and expert consultants to support our ambition to transform council services in the best interests of our residents.”

A motion to be debated by Labour councillors later this month states: “Haringey Labour group believes that direct employees have a better understanding than external consultants of the authority’s wider objectives and ethos.

"We also believe that returning the balance at a senior level and across the authority to directly employed staff means that skills and experience will stay within the borough.”

The motion continues to propose that all senior council officers are employed directly by the council, rather than through consultancy firms.

The motion, sent to every Labour party member in Haringey, will be debated by councillors in a Labour Group meeting on September 25.
