Schoolchildren watched falconry and ferret racing as part of a day showcasing rural life.

Pupils at Tiverton Primary School took part in an educational Countryside Live show at Lea Valley Regional Park.

The children met animals including bees, bats and snakes as well as traditional farmyard animals.

They also had a chance to try crafts such as willow-weaving and making corn dollies.

Gary Richardson, chief executive of Countryside Learning said: “We’re proud to be working in partnership with Lee Valley Regional Park Authority in bringing together more than 40 different exhibitors and activities, which will give the capital’s children an unforgettable experience.”

The school trip was a precursor to the public ‘kids go free’ event this weekend in which families will be able to learn about where food comes from.

Saturday and Sunday will also play host to a dancing sheep show as well as activities enjoyed by schoolchildren during the week.

Karen Wheeler, Youth and Schools Manager at Lee Valley Regional Park Authority said: “So few children and young people get to experience farms and countryside activities. This is a great taster of the power of outdoor learning.”

The public weekend event will be held at Leyton Marsh on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Adult entry costs £5 for a single day pass and £7 for two day pass.
