Travellers who have moved into a Tottenham park are being taken ‘very seriously’ by Haringey Borough Council.

A group of six caravans and mobile homes and several cars arrived in Down Lane Park on Tuesday.

The local authority has said that it will be taking action to try and move the travellers off of the site.

A Haringey Council spokesman said: “We are aware of an unauthorised traveller encampment in Down Lane Park.

“We understand the concerns of local residents and business owners and take these very seriously. We’re in the process of taking appropriate action to try to move on the travellers and clear the site as quickly as possible.”

Martin Ball, chairman of Friends of Down Lane Park, wants security to be improved at the park to stop future illegal encampments.

Mr Ball said: "We are pressing the council for these squatters to be removed as soon as is possible in order for the park users to have the space back.

“Once the squatters have been removed then the council has to invest in security improvements that stop people being able to drive on and set up camp.”
