Crowds gathered to celebrate Haringey's multiculturalism with a festival on Tottenham Green today.

The afternoon, run by youth charity Efiba Arts, celebrated the charity’s tenth anniversary with live bands, music and dance performances on the green off the High Road.

Stalls manned by community groups offered cupcakes, African jewellery and Italian snacks, as well as the opportunity to make carnival costumes.

Reverend Emmanuel Aggrey-Ogoe, chairman of Efiba Arts’ board of directors, said the day had taken a lot of planning.

He said: “This is something we really want to involve others in, so on our tenth anniversary we thought we’d do something on the green to create an atmosphere and bring people in.”

Sally Sturgeon, of People’s World Carnival Band, said the festival was a good way for community groups to get more people involved.

Rachel Roberts, who had a stall selling handmade African jewellery, was keen to show off the best of Africa.

She said: “I’m from West Africa, and this table is meant to show off a little bit of what you can see from around Africa. It’s also a way of representing women, it’s just a joy to share things from around Africa.”

Matthew Creber, chairman of Friends of Tottenham Green, said he liked the event and would like to see more things happening on the green.
