A ceiling collapsed above shoppers in a supermarket after it was damaged by rain.

The collapse took place in Sainsbury’s, in Green Lanes, at 11am this morning. No one was injured.

The supermarket is closed while engineers fix the ceiling, and will re-open later today or tomorrow.

A photograph sent to the Tottenham and Wood Green Independent shows several panels hanging down above what appears to be the checkout area.

One witness, Sue, who was shopping at the time, said: "There was an almighty crash and then the staff just ran. I think what happened was that rain water had gathered, because there had been water dripping from the ceiling.

“Then the whole thing came crashing down above the tills and there was a lot of water on the floor. There was a girl sitting at the tills below it serving, but she had just moved to get something from somewhere else just before the collapse. Nobody was hurt."

Twitter user Greg O Ceallaigh tweeted: “So the ceiling of Haringey @sainsburys just fell in, with people and debris landing around customers. No-one hurt. PA sounded unperturbed.”

A spokesman for Sainsbury's said: “There was an issue with the ceiling after some heavy rainfall, but this was immediately contained and we’re working with our engineers to fix it."
