Nine new council homes are to be built by Haringey Council, the first to given the go-ahead for 25 years.

The plans, approved in a council meeting last night, will see four houses built in Clarence Road, Bounds Green, two in Florence Road, Stroud Green, and three in Muswell Hill Place.

One of the new homes will be sold privately, helping to fund social rents for the remaining eight properties.

Two months ago government statistics revealed that Haringey had the third highest loss of council homes in London.

Although 250 council homes were sold under the Right to Buy scheme between 2012 and 2014, no new homes were built with the money received from the sales.

The council says the newly announced council properties are the first of more than 100 social rented and shared ownership homes currently planned.

Councillor Alan Strickland, cabinet member for regeneration and housing, said: “Every family in Haringey has the right to live in a modern, affordable high-quality home, and these first new council houses demonstrate our commitment to making that a reality.

“While we’re working on long-term plans to bring thousands of homes for the future, we’re determined to get cracking now on building new council properties that give more choices to residents struggling to find an affordable place to live.

“With a mix of social housing and options for shared ownership on the way, we will give a helping hand to those struggling to save for a deposit in the face of ever-rising house prices.”
