More than 2,600 fixed penalty notices were issued for driving offences in Haringey last year, new figures have shown.

Road safety charity Brake released figures today, as it launched its Road Safety Week.

Across the borough, 2,509 fixed penalty notices were issued for speeding and 95 for careless driving, which became a fixed penalty offence in August 2013.

The borough’s worst postcode was N17, which covers White Hart Lane, Bruce Grove, Northumberland and Tottenham Hale, with a total of 418 offences in 2013.

With 33 fines handed out, N17 also had more than double the number of careless drivers compared to the second highest postcode of N22, where 15 drivers were fined.

The lowest figures were for Highgate and Crouch End, with the N6 postcode scoring only 204 penalties for careless driving or speeding.

Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive of Brake, said: “When drivers use roads without care for others the consequences can be tragic and horrific – people killed and badly injured, lives ruined forever, because of a moment of impatience or selfishness."
