An emergency meeting to discuss Haringey Borough Council's proposed budget is due to be held tomorrow.

The council’s overview and scrutiny panel will look again at plans for £70m of cuts after the opposition Liberal Democrats ‘called in’ the budget.

The budget was passed by the council's cabinet last week and is due to be voted on by the full council meeting on Monday, but the call in means the overview and scrutiny panel will need to look at them again.

The Lib Dems want the council to shift the focus of its cuts away from services and onto communications and spending on temporary staff.

Lib Dem councillor Sarah Elliott said: “The Liberal Democrats believe that the Labour cabinet has not fully considered all the alternatives that are available and is instead ploughing ahead with badly thought through cuts to services for the most vulnerable in the borough.

“We all accept that reduced funding means cuts will have to be made but Labour should be doing more to find savings before they cut vital services.”

The meeting of the scrutiny panel is due to be held at the Civic Centre in High Road, Wood Green at 1.30pm tomorrow.

A Haringey Council spokesperson said: “We understand people’s concerns about the impact on services.

"However, the huge cuts to our budget mean we have no choice but to find ways to make significant savings.

"The budget proposals include protection for care packages and measures to support local communities, while also recognising the need to invest in growth and regeneration so that we can give all of our communities the future they deserve, with access to the best opportunities the borough has to offer.”
