Former captain and ‘heart-beat’ of the famous Tottenham Hotspur double winning team of 1961 Dave Mackay has died.

The Scot, who won the league and three FA Cups in his time at Spurs, died at the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham yesterday evening at the age of 80.

A strong, determined footballer with superb technique, Mackay is widely regarded as having been one of the most influential players of his generation, George Best once describing him as: “The hardest man I have ever played against – and certainly the bravest.”

His partnership with Danny Blanchflower propelled the Lilywhites to the first league and cup double in the modern era, a feat still remembered and revered by Spurs fans.

Tottenham Hotspur said they were “saddened” to hear of his death and extended their condolences to the Mackay family. The club will be publishing a full obituary shortly.
