Protesters took up placards and flags on behalf of a supermarket security guard.

Shoppers and trade unionists stood outside Sainsbury’s Local in West Green Road, West Green, to demonstrate on behalf of a security guard facing possible disciplinary action.

The guard, who is directly employed by Securitas on behalf of Sainsbury’s, has had his shift pattern changed to late nights only rather than a mixture of times.

When he objected to this change, which had taken place without consultation with his Union Unite, he was told he would face disciplinary action.

The protest was supported by Unite and the Haringey Trade Union and Socialist Coalition (TUSC).

Haringey Trades Union Council secretary Keith Flett said: “Supermarkets like Sainsbury’s are large employers in areas like Tottenham but that doesn’t give them, or the contractors they employ, the right to treat employees like slaves, arbitrarily changing their working conditions.”

Securitas and Sainsbury’s have been approached for comment.
