A survey of more than 500 people has shown that traditional, independently run business are what people want for their high street.

The survey, conducted by the group We Love Myddleton Road, found that the top three shops people want to see in Myddleton Road, Bowes Park, are a butcher, baker and an independent coffee shop.

Friendliness and sense of community were frequently cited as things people liked about the street alongside the independent character of it with more than half of respondents saying they’d prefer not to have chain stores move in.

Chair of the We Love Myddleton Road Group Toby Nation said: “This week we are celebrating the unveiling of refurbished Victorian shop fronts with a community led "cash mob" to support our independent traders.

“Myddelton Road Market and festival on June 28 will be another chance to bring the whole community together on our high street.

“There is something really special emerging on Myddleton Road.”

The group hope that the results of the survey will encourage landlords to invest in their propertiesand encourage new businesses to open and get traders appealing to the spending habits of the community.
