Two police officers from Haringey came to the rescue of stricken parents by delivering a baby boy in a broken down car.

PCs Laura De’Jesus and Luke James were driving along Station Road, New Southgate, early this morning when they came across a mother in the late stages of labour, with the baby's head emerging.

They had been flagged down by a motorist who explained to the officers that he was on the way to the hospital with his heavily pregnant wife as she had gone into labour when his car broke down.

The PCs called an ambulance but soon realised they would need to help the mother give birth.

They safely delivered the healthy baby boy at 2.10am this morning.

Paramedics arrived shortly afterwards and took mother and child to hospital.

PC De’Jesus said: "The great thing about being a police officer is that you never know what you are going to encounter on your shift.

"I am glad we were on hand and able to assist the woman in delivering her healthy baby boy."

PC James added: "On assessing the woman’s condition it became clear that we were going to have to deliver the baby before the arrival of the ambulance.

"I am just happy everything went smoothly and mother and baby are well."
