A teenager has been jailed for life for the murder of a “friendly and caring” man from south London.

Student Tajwar Alam, 19, of Seaford Road, South Tottenham stabbed Hassan Mohammed twice in York Road, Southend on July 7, 2014.

Mr Mohammed, 24, of Camberwell, was airlifted to Southend Hospital for emergency surgery, but died from his wounds the following morning.

A post-mortem report shows he bled to death.

Alam had denied murder but was convicted by a majority verdict on May 28 after a trial at Chelmsford Crown Court.

He was sentenced at the same court yesterday, and was told he would spend a minimum of 20 years in prison before being considered for parole.

DCI Simon Werrett, of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: "The judge described him as a callous young man with a tendency to violence.

"The sentence handed down today will ensure the people of Southend are safe from Alam and hopefully give Hassan’s family some closure so they can move on with their lives, although nothing will bring their son back.”

Mr Mohammed had been visiting friends in Southend when he was murdered.

In a statement released last July, his family said: "Hassan was a very friendly, caring person.

"He grew from a boy into a man and was a protector and best friend to his family.

"He was loved by all but especially by his two nieces who adored their Uncle Hass immensely.

"We pray that justice is served and that he soon will be able to rest in peace."
