David Lammy has edged into second place in the running to become Labour’s candidate for London mayor.
A recent surge in support has moved him ahead of shadow justice secretary Sadiq Kahn according to YouGov poll.
Among Labour voters the MP for Tottenham has increased his support from 15% to 22% putting him just ahead of the MP for Tooting on 21%.
Mr Lammy was the first Labour candidate to enter the race last year summer but quickly fell behind favourite and former Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell as well as Mr Kahn.
His recent surge coincides with a drop in support for Hackney and Stoke Newington MP Dianne Abbott whose support has dropped to 13% among Labour voters.
The deadline for Trade Unions to affiliate their members and for members of the public to register to vote in the primary election is just over a month away.
Voting papers will be sent out on August 14 with the ballot closing on September 10.
Labour will announce the winner during the party’s autumn conference which starts on September 27.
