It was a momentous moment for a high school as it celebrated its first GCSE results.

Heartlands high school, in Station Road, took a risk by hosting its inaugural results day outside and its pupils did not disappoint.

Emotions were running high for both pupil and parent as Mayowa Akinyemi got three A*s and 6A grades, leaving her father blubbing with joy.

She said: “I was so sick and terrified last night, I just turned my phone off and tried to get some sleep. But this is incredible, I am so happy, I cannot describe it.”

The 16-year-old will now be doing geography, maths, chemistry and biology.

Walking to get your results is so 2014, as student De’Jhay Robinson proved as he rocked up on his Segway Board to collect his results and saw him do enough to get into Enfield College and train with Borehamwood FC.

Joining the school three years ago without speaking a word of English, Bulgarian Denis Yobchev produced stunning results to get 3As and 3Bs including maths and English.

He said: “I am so happy, I was never expecting this from my GCSEs, this is a special day.”

The look of amazement was etched across the face of Todd Godderidge, 16, who achieved 7A*s, two As and a B and described the day as “the most important in his life.”

He said: “This piece of paper means everything right now. I am ecstatic right now, I expected to get some good results but never on this level and its enough for me to get into Woodhouse college, which was my aim.”

Executive headteacher Simon Garrill told the Haringey Independent it was a “special day”.

He said: “I have been with this school since it opened and so have these students so it is a very special day for us all. Thankfully the weather has been on our side and we are delighted with our first set of results.

“Students and staff really responded to our high expectations and they could not have worked any harder. I think as teachers we were more nervous than the pupils to see the results.”
