Traders and community groups opposing Haringey council's 'bland and unimaginative' plans for the redevelopment of Wards Corner are displaying their proposals to the public at an exhibition in Seven Sisters market from tomorrow.

Wards corner, the apex of Seven Sisters and Tottenham High Road, will be the first of three projects to regenerate the area.

But critics say the council proposals which include demolishing the locally listed Ward building, a former Edwardian department store, to make way for 200 modern homes will destroy the character of the area.

The alternative proposals, submitted to the council earlier this month, focus on restoring key features instead of and replacing them with modern designs, a new and improved Seven Sisters market and more open space.

The plans will be displayed in Seven Sisters market throughout December where members of the community will be able to give feedback on the design.

Wendy Keenan, of the Fountains Area Residents Associaion said: "We will be asking a full range of questions, unlike the so-called consultation on the council scheme. All that they asked people to comment on was the design of the pavement area and where to plant some trees, which isn't good enough.

"Any redevelopment proposal should reflect what the community wants, and that's why we're inviting people to comment on our alternative plan."
