A convoy of both Haringey’s keen and budding cyclists will be heading into the city today for a tour of central London with a difference.
Pedalling off from the Civic Centre in High Road, Wood Green, the cyclists will join up to 40,000 other Londoners as they enjoy a tour of London’s most impressive landmarks like Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace on roads closed to traffic.
Now in its second year, the Sky Sports London Freewheel event is the largest mass cycle ride in the UK and brings together cyclists of all ages and abilities in a bid to promote the sport.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: "Cycling is a great way to get fit, it saves you money, and it’s good for the environment. For those who are still not convinced the Freewheel is the perfect opportunity to get your bike back on the road.
"For one day only we'll be closing the roads of central London to allow Londoners of all ages, backgrounds and cycling abilities the chance to enjoy our fantastic city by bike. What could be nicer than feeling the wind on your face as you zip past some of London's most famous landmarks, completely undisturbed by traffic."
Along the 12km central route there will be hubs at various points across the city providing a rest and meeting point, bike check areas and information stands. Haringey cyclists will set off from the Civic Centre on at 10:30am.
