'Politics of hate not wanted here,' says union

An anti-facist group has been set up to oppose a candidate in next month's ward elections.

The Haringey anti-fascist coalition has been created to protest at the candidacy of BNP candidate Frederick Halsey, in the Alexandra Ward by-election.

Mr Halsey, from Wood Green, will be the first candidate from the British National Party to stand for election in the borough on October 9.

His nomination has caused outrage in the community and Haringey's Trade Union Council (TUC) has formed a coalition to try to ensure he does not win.

TUC chair Keith Flett said: "We already have a strong base of trade union and community activists in Alexandra Ward who will form the core of our work but we are keen to underline that is an all-Haringey effort which will send the message to the BNP that the politics of hate are not wanted here."

The coalition will include members of campaigning group Unite Against Fascism, trade unions and community activists, who will leaflet every house in Alexandra Ward next week.

A public meeting will be held on Wednesday at the Bookhouse, 410 Tottenham High Road at 7.30pm.

Regarding the adverse comments made about Fredrick Halsey and the BNP. I would point out that any hate is not within the BNP policies as we do not in fact hate Anybody, (except possibly the Politicians that turned this Country into an assortment of third world ghettos.
Hatred, Fascism and even Racism (yes Racism) lies within the communist and left wing has beens that would deny us the opportunity to have a fair say and debate with ANY opponent.
Rather they would silence all BNP members and persecute those that only ask for fair play.
God bless Fredrick Halsey as even in Harringay, enough is enough.

The BNP's politics of COMMON SENSE is needed all over the country, but especially in London - which is being turned in to a third world ghetto. The unions should concentrate on fighting the 'fat cats' & protecting British jobs from wage under-cutting immigrants, rather than meddling in politics. Good Luck Fred!

Racial hatred and intolerance is not wanted in a borough whose residents speak over 400 different languages.

Historically, there always has been a significant minority of supporters of the NF, and the BNP in Tottenham, and some other areas like Alexandra Palace. The candidates should be limited in carrying out their ambitions.. I would not recommend that a candidate run in any ward or constituency covering Haringey that wishes to actually win, in this day and age anyway.

You "just go for it" because you lead a narrow-minded, sad, hateful life. The vast majority of the borough (even 'our peoples') probably speak a different language anyway. You should be ashamed.
