A HUB of culture and creativity like 'Sloane Square' is at the centre of the regeneration of Haringey Heartlands.

An outline planning application, submitted to Haringey Council last Tuesday, March 24, reveals the Hornsey development of up to 1,200 homes, offices and shops will be built around a proposed Clarendon Square and filled with cafes, bars and restaurants.

The regeneration also hopes to create 1,500 new jobs.

The five-hectare site between Hornsey Park Road and Clarendon Road will significantly benefit the area and is the biggest public square introduced in the borough in one hundred years, developers said.

Adrian Cross, of National Grid, who submitted the application in partnership with the London Development Agency, said: "We have worked hard with the council and the community to create exciting proposals for Wood Green’s new residential district.

"It is centred around a high quality public square similar to Sloane Square. The proposals will regenerate this former gas works site and represents the first phase of the redevelopment of the Haringey Heartlands".

The proposals have been designed by Make Architects and Drivers Jonas LLP are providing planning and development advice.

Residents have been consulted on the development over the past two years and includes a new secondary school Heartlands High scheduled to open in September 2010 and Mary Neuner Road which links the north and south of the borough.

Concerns have been raised about the limited 251 parking spaces included in the design for 1,200 homes.

Gillian Graham, of Great Amwell Lane, said: "Where will the other 750 families park their vehicles? There is no obvious parking sources in the surrounding streets.

"The provision of restaurants and other leisure facilities also mean the volume of traffic will increase substantially."

Her concerns have been echoed by other residents whose homes neighbour the project.
