Fighting drunkards banned from Wood Green

THREE drunks have been banned from Wood Green's town centre following antisocial behaviour which affected residents and shopkeepers.

Mehmet Ali, 46, of Talbot Close, Tottenham, Paul Banks, 46, of Leyton, and Terrence Delacy, 58, of Crescent Road, Wood Green, were often found loitering outside of Morrison's supermarket drinking alcohol, vomiting and picking fights with each other.

Eye witnesses also spotted the trio urinating in broad daylight, begging for money and intimidating shoppers.

They were also believed to be engaging in dog fighting.

Councillor Nilgun Canver (Labour/St Ann's), cabinet member for enforcement and community safety, said: "In the past we tried to help these people by diverting them to appropriate voluntary organisations to support them.

"However the behaviour of these men in one of the busiest areas of Haringey was completely unacceptable."

Cllr Canver said the banning order, issued by Tottenham Magistrates Court, was thanks to a team effort between traders, the police and residents.

She added: "We will continue to take action to ensure that this area is free of this kind of activity."

Haringey residents provided the council's Antisocial Behaviour Action Team (ASBAT) with witness statements as to how the behaviour of the street drinkers affected their daily lives.

In particular, those shoppers who used the busy bus stops outside the supermarket.

CCTV footage was also used to bring the case.

Ali, who appeared in court, was issued with an ASBO for three years, banning him from Wood Green Central Library and the Goose pub, both in High Road, Wood Green.

He was also ordered not to cause alarm or distress in Haringey.

The two other defendants did not attend court and were issued with ASBOs for five years, banning them from the same area.

Further work is underway by the ASBAT team to tackle other street drinkers.
