Haringey's Kurdish community says 'Happy New Year'

9:00am Sunday 21st March 2010

THE dawning of Spring will be marked today as Haringey's Kurdish community celebrates their new year.

Kurdish spring festival Newroz, or New Sun, is observed annually on March 21 and is a celebration of light over dark, according to the culture.

It also celebrates renewal and freedom from oppression, and during Newroz the community will dress in red, yellow and green — the colours of the Kurdish flag.

Residents will gather today at Tottenham Green Leisure Centre to ring in the new year.

Highlights include live music, singing, guest speakers, traditional Kurdish dance and, of course, food and drinks.
