Man arrested in race clashes

THE Haringey-based leader of an anti-fascist group has been arrested following violent clashes in Bolton yesterday.

Weyman Bennett, the joint secretary of Unite Against Facism (UAF), was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit violent disorder following clashes with the English Defence League and police yesterday.

Thousands of demonstrator from both groups gathered in Victoria Square on the city to air their views.

However, Greater Manchester Police, who made 74 arrests during the clashes, have accused the UAF of coming to cause trouble, although a spokesman for the group said they were subjected to unwarranted attacks b officers.

In September the two groups clashed during protests by the EDF outside a mosque in Harrow.
