NHS Haringey has launched a new service for older people offering advice on how to avoid falls and fractures.
Targeted programmes for strength and balance can help older people to keep active and reduce their risk of falling by as much as 60 per cent.
A broken hip is a common injury resulting from a fall, and can lead to long term mobility problems for older people. Up to 20 per cent of patients who suffer a hip fracture need long term care, and a further 30 per cent are unable to regain normal health as many patients become immobile.
Physiotherapist Anthony Antoniou, at NHS Haringey Community Health Services said: "Being fit and active is very important in old age in order to maintain independence and good health. "To help people achieve this, NHS Haringey is helping people to reduce the risk of falls and stay mobile.
"The programme teaches exercises to improve balance and also includes advice on foot health, physiotherapy and occupational therapy."
