Schoolchildren marched through Hornsey High Street in a singing procession to celebrate Palm Sunday.

Pupils from St Mary’s Infant School in Church Lane walked to St Mary’s Junior School in Rectory Gardens before walking together through High Street on Thursday.

The group were led by teachers carrying a giant crown to mark today's special Christian day.

Father Bruce Batstone, rector of Hornsey Parish Church in Cranley Gardens, and Fran Hargrove, who is the headteacher of the infant school, also joined in on the action.

The two Church of England schools are in talks to work together as one from the beginning of next year, with Mrs Hargrove acting as head for both.

Fr Bruce said: “Palm Sunday is about Jesus who is crowned king of our lives as Christians, a faith that is at the very heart of both of St Mary’s schools.

“This term has seen a great deal of hard work from the teachers, governors and children of both schools as they look towards life together.

“I hope this celebration will be an opportunity for much joy as prepare for a much deserved holiday.”

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, which is the week before Easter Sunday each year.
