“Scaremongering” about Haringey bin collections is not constructive and must stop, say Labour councillors.

The comments come after Liberal Democrat politicians, who strongly oppose fortnightly waste collections, called for an urgent review of the changes to the service.

But the Labour-led council says it has no plans to review the bin collections and claim that most people in the borough have responded positively to the changes.

Councillor Nilgun Canver, who is the cabinet member for environment, said: “This is yet more cynical scaremongering from the local Liberal Democrats.

“What most people are saying is how little general waste they have left in their bins and how much more they are now recycling.

“To be frank, it’s about time the Lib Dems stopped trying to stoke up trouble and worked with us constructively to raise awareness of the benefits of recycling and reducing landfill. Also, they should be engaged with residents to ensure the new scheme works for each and every household.”

Recycling continues to be collected weekly despite household waste in Muswell Hill, Highgate, Alexandra Palace, Fortis Green and parts of Crouch End, Woodside, Noel Park, Hornsey and Bounds Green, being collected just once a fortnight.

The move, which is expected to save the council £900,000 per year, aims to encourage more people to recycle. Garden and food waste is still collected weekly.

Lib Dem councillor Jim Jenks hit out at the council for introducing the fortnightly service, which he believes poses major problems for homes of multiple occupancy, such as flats.

Cllr Canver said that although some issues have cropped up with such properties, Haringey Council has acted quickly to provide bins of a “more appropriate” size.

The changes, which include replacing small green recycling boxes with large wheelie bins, were introduced to the west of the borough at the beginning of March.

Although no review is planned to take place to investigate issues raised by Lib Dem politicians, the council will only bring the changes to the rest of Haringey when any teething problems have been ironed out.
