A self-employed joiner lost almost a week’s wages in one hit when he was clamped outside Bounds Green Tube station.

To make matters worse, the 55-year-old was targeted on the notoriously unlucky day, Friday, April 13.

The clamping victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, parked in Brownlow Road while he was collecting his friend from the station.

Little did he know, his good deed would cost him £175. He was fined £125 to unlock the wheel clamp and £45 in penalty charges.

The driver, who lives in Palmers Green, did not know the street was private property and claims the signs warning people that clampers are in operation are on the opposite side of the road and not clearly visible.

He says he was still walking away from his Jeep when he spotted three men clamping his car.

According to the joiner, when he confronted the men, who are employed by clamping firm Sango Security Limited, one of them laughed.

He says the staff told him there was “nothing they could do” as they had already called the tow truck.

The joiner, who is struggling to find two or three days work due to tough financial times, said: “I had only quickly got out of the car to pick up my friend and they were doing it in front of my very eyes.

“It was very intimidating – there were three of them and one of them was laughing. I wasn’t amused at all.”

By chance, the joiner, who earns approximately £100 per day, had exactly the right amount of cash in his wallet, but could not believe he had to hand over so much money at once.

He said he cannot understand how it can cost so much to remove the clamp when it was fitted so loosely in the first place.

What is more, he insists the men were waiting in the area ready to catch an unsuspecting driver.

He said: “They waited until I was out of ear shot, this can’t be right.

“I personally think the whole thing should be illegal in the first place because you can’t just be able to immobilise someone’s property. If they don’t want you to park there, why are they making you stay there?”

He has appealed the fine and asked the firm for a full reimbursement to prove the "good character" of the company.

Despite the letter dating April 16, he is yet to hear a word from the clamping firm.

The Haringey Independent has tried to contact Sango Security Limited, but there is no email address or telephone number listed online.

At this stage, a PO Box address is all that can be found for the company.
