Clamping bringing 'misery' to Bounds Green visitors
Clamping outside Bounds Green Tube station is causing “misery” to unsuspecting visitors, according to a campaigner.
Kevin Smith, 42, is sick of seeing drivers being handed hefty fines from clamping firm Sango Security Limited when they pull up in Latham Court and Queens Parade, which are small side streets off Brownlow Road.
He believes something needs to be done to stop the clamping, which can cost drivers up to £175 each time they park in the private streets outside a parade of shops.
He said: “Clampers are in operation on both sides of the road which is inflicting misery on unsuspecting visitors while locals have to witness the confrontation each time they pass by.
“It is completely immoral but a lot of people are too scared to do anything about it because they feel the threat of the clampers.
"The simplest message that we have got to get across is that clamping has got to stop."
Mr Smith, who is a computer programmer and lives nearby, believes staff from the clamping firm lurk in alleyways and wait for people to park in the road.
He started to lobby Haringey Council two months ago in a bid to put a stop to the practise.
He said he sees one member of staff in the street most days waiting to apply clamps on drivers as soon as they leave their vehicle.
However, he accepts the signs warning drivers that clamping is in operation are clear.
He also accepts parking in front of the shops can obstruct shops from unloading their goods, as well as preventing fire engines from accessing the narrow streets in case of fire.
The issue was raised yesterday after an anonymous driver was charged almost a week's wages on Friday, April 13, for pausing to collect a friend from Bounds Green Tube station while parking in Brownlow Road.
The Haringey Independent has tried to contact Sango Security Limited, but there is no email address or telephone number listed online.
At this stage, a PO Box address is all that can be found.
