Labour’s Joanne McCartney is “delighted” to have held the Enfield and Haringey seat in the London Assembly.

Ms McCartney was cheered as it was announced she received 74,034 votes, beating off Conservative Andy Hemsted who came in second with 37,293 votes.

Ms McCartney admitted she thought the result would be tight after just managing to hold the seat in 2008 by 0.8 per cent from the Conservatives.

She said: “I’m delighted not only for myself but for the whole Labour team.

“I think the result shows that people are concerned about the current government. On the doorstep people are telling us they’re struggling – they’re finding it hard to pay the bills and they can’t afford their rents anymore.

“I think people see what damage the Tory government is doing and Boris has failed to deliver what he promised four years ago for outer London. We have seen cuts to police services and affordable homes haven’t been built.

“I’m going to continue to bring a strong voice for Enfield and Haringey and challenge the Mayor to make sure we get a fair share of money that’s going and get a fair share of police back on our streets.”
