Vegetable plots for all in Hornsey Mildura Court flats

Vegetable plots for tenants living in a block of flats in Hornsey are up and running after a successful bid for funding.

Thirty-eight plots were officially opened on Saturday afternoon in the back garden of in Mildura Court in Church Lane, one for each tenant living in the flats.

The space, which was previously not used, has been transformed after the Mildura Court Residents Association secured £5,000 funding from Haringey Council, Big Lottery and the Tenants and Residents Association.

Volunteers from the environment regeneration charity Groundwork London lent a hand to build the garden.

Councillor John Bevan, cabinet member for housing at Haringey Council, who attended the garden's launch, said: "This garden is a fantastic example of what can be done and we need to find other locations in Haringey to do this.

"Bringing residents together and encouraging children to get involved can only be a good thing.”

The plots have already been filled with vegetables after staff from Groundwork London and Homes for Haringey spent a day helping tenants develop and build the garden.

More than 30 tonnes of compost was needed to fill the plots.

Groundwork hope the garden will develop food growing and gardening skills for tenants, help build community cohesion as well as improve and maintain the outdoor environment of the flats.
