The minimum age Londoners can qualify for free travel in the capital will be reverted back to 60, Mayor Boris Johnson has confirmed.

Since April 2010, the age at which people can qualify for a Freedom Pass has risen from 60 to 61 on an escalator system.

A new Oyster photocard being introduced later this year will reinstate free travel on London’s Tube, DLR, overground, bus and tram services for all over-60s.

Qualification criteria for the Freedom Pass will remain the same but the new card, funded by TfL, will bridge the gap for those reaching their 60th birthday.

The move was one of the Tory mayor’s pledges to voters in his election manifesto earlier this year.

Great Boris give freedom passes to over 60's and claims all the glory and ratepayers pick up the bill. Barnet's charge from TFL for freedom passes is already over £10 million a year. This will just up the bill further. Any fool can give away other people's money.
