Police join council to crackdown on illegal gambling machines
1:49pm Friday 20th July 2012 in News By Hermione Wright
More than 40 illegal gambling machines have been removed from premises across Haringey this week.
Police officers worked with enforcement officers from Haringey Council to take 44 machines from properties without gambling licenses.
Haringey Borough Commander Sandra Looby said: "We will use our full range of powers alongside the council and other law enforcement agencies, in order to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour to make Haringey safer."
The operation served to clamp down on illegal gambling in the borough.
Councillor Nilgun Canver, who is campaigning against the clustering of betting shops in the borough, said: "Premises require a licence to house these machines so that we can monitor their effect on the community.
“The council is determined to ensure that only those with licences are allowed to keep them because they can attract anti-social behaviour and problems for local communities."
