Warnings over new fake workman scam

People are being called to warn older friends and family about a bogus caller scam.

The police appeal comes after an 82-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man had two men knock at their door in a block of flats in Priory Road.

The two men claimed they were working on the flat above and there was a leak they needed to check inside the flat.

One of the scammers then entered the flat and asked the man and woman to turn off the water from under the sink and boiler.

The man became suspicious and went to check with a neighbour upstairs and when he returned the two men had left.

It was later found the communal front door had been forced open.

One of the two suspects is described as a  6ft tall white male, of slim build, slightly athletic, well spoken in smart clothing.

The other is as male, white about 6ft 2 inches tall, fit and athletic looking and also in smart clothing.

Officers have called for people to warn their friends and family about the scam and if they are worried about a caller they should call the police.
