Supermarket loses alcohol licence following investigation

A supermarket has lost its licence to sell alcohol for selling dodgy vodka.

Following an investigation by Trading Standards, it was found the Gunes Supermarket, in Park Lane, Tottenham, had purchased alcohol for retail sale through illicit or unauthorised sources.

The review came after Trading Standards seized bottles of counterfeit Glen’s Vodka and Durex condoms from the premises in 2008.

Then in 2010 officers from trading standards found bottles of dangerous vodka and non duty paid alcohol.

Analysis of the vodka found it contained toxic chemicals which were not fit for human consumption.

Haringey Council’s licensing committee revoked the premises license because the owner showed “persistent disregard for the prevention of crime and disorder and public safety, through continuing to purchase alcohol for retail sale through illicit or unauthorised sources.”
