Campaigners against the expansion of a school are delighted by the decision from an adjudicator rejecting the proposals.

Earlier this week the Office of the Schools Adjudicator announced it had rejected the plans from Haringey Council to expand Belmont Infant and Belmont junior schools.

Under the plans the two schools, in Rusper Road, Tottenham, would go from a two-form entry to a three-term entry in September 2013.

The expansion was met with fierce opposition from parents, governors and Labour MP for Tottenham David Lammy who urged the council to reconsider.

Lynne Hubbard, Chair of the Belmont Home School Association said: “We are delighted by the schools adjudicator’s ruling. Finally the concerns that we have been repeating for a year have been listened to.

“This decision supports our argument that local families are best served by community schools.

“Instead of warehousing children simply to make up the numbers, Haringey should concentrate on improving standards and school buildings across the borough.

“Hopefully the money which Haringey earmarked for this project will now be used to support Belmont and other Tottenham schools which are crying out for funding and repairs.”

The announcement form the adjudicator comes after a year of intense debate over the council’s proposal to build seven new classrooms on the playgrounds and gardens of the site.

In a statement the council said it was disappointed by the announcement and would not appeal the decision.

This is fantastic news. For too long, Harringey council have presumed that they will always have it their way. They have neglected education in the borough for years - especially in the eastern part. Well done Belmont for not letting them bully you. Shame on Harringey if they try to appeal the decision. High court judicial review? Are they going to waste our council taxes on lawyers' fees? Don't embarrass yourselves.

After a year of campaigning against the forced expansion of our school, an independent body has listened to both sides and found that our arguments were right. We made a coherent and serious case against expansion - but Haringey never engaged with our arguments or gave any proper justification for theirs. They think that because they are the the council they can steamroller the people of Tottenham into doing whatever they say.

Read the whole ruling by the schools adjudicator and make your own conclusion about the quality of our local authority. A shambles.

Overt or covert autocratic decision-making by this council must come to an end. It took an instance like this to mobilize people enough to come out against those who have been responsible for all kinds of antics for so long - in the name of democracy, if you please. The lesson must be clear enough now to the officers as well as the Labour councillors, subservient as they are to the former, that they can only go so far and no further.

I agree the Belmont expansion plans are a total shambles. This latest episode with Tottenham schools does show the Labour council in a very bad light.
When will they start listening to parents and teachers in Haringey?
Part of the problem is that school places are needed at reception and Year 1 but by the time the children are in Key Stage 2 many schools have surplus places. Forcing expansion on schools against their choice is not the answer.
