Garage destroyed in fire Garage destroyed in fire

A road closed due to a fire which gutted a garage has been reopened.

Firefighters were called to the garage in Wightman Road, at the junction of Effingham Road, in Harrigay, at 4.55pm on Saturday October 13.

More than 30 firefighters and six engines attended the scene of the blaze that destroyed the workshop which had a vehicle inside at the time.

Two men had escaped the fire before the Brigade arrived and were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

Crews were at the scene for just over five hours as two large cylinders had to be cooled as a precaution to prevent them from exploding.

Wightman Road was closed in both directions following the fire because the building was deemed unsafe. The road has is now partially opened as workmen secure the building.

The London Fire Brigade say the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
