Haringey Council gets new chief executive

Councillors officially appointed Nick Walkley as Haringey Council’s new chief executive tonight.

At a meeting of the Full Council, members voted by majority to appointment Mr Walkley as the new CEO of the borough.

During the meeting there were boos against the appointment from protesters in the gallery .

Protesters also gathered outside Haringey Civic Centre in High Road, Wood Green, calling on councillors to oppose the appointment.

Mr Walkley resigned from his role in Barnet two weeks ago where he was instrumental in the privatisation of key council services.

Last week a petition was launched against his appointment calling on councillors to oppose the decision and any plans for mass outsourcing of council services.

With the number of people who have opposed this appointment, the battle cannot be said to be over. We are still observers. It could be a bit risky for those who voted for it to rely on social amnesia in their pursuit of a long career in the Civic Centre, if things begin to go wrong.
