Councillor welcomes betting shop decision
5:19pm Thursday 18th October 2012 in News By Bruce Thain
A Haringey Borough Councillor has welcomed the announcement plans for a new betting shop have been put on hold.
The statement comes after estate agent Kinleigh, Folkard and Hayward (KFH) announced plans for a new betting shop in Green Lanes, Harringay, would be delayed following concerns raised by the community.
Councillor Nilgun Canver said: “This shows what we can do as a community when we come together to express our opposition to yet more betting shops on our local high streets.
“This is despite Government legislation giving bookies a virtual free hand over where they operate.
“It’s still only a delay in the application though, and I urge all those residents who are fed up of betting shops on Green Lanes to make their concerns known to the owners or get in contact with myself or David Lammy.
“We need to get the message across loud and clear that Green lanes doesn’t need another betting shop.”
The plans were to put in a new shop on the corner of St. Ann’s Road by company Tipico, which predominantly works in online gambling.
A spokeswoman for KFH said they had listened to the concerns voiced by people and they had put the plans on hold as they re-explore other options and work with the local community to find a mutually satisfactory solution.
