Domestic violence centre receives top award

A centre supporting people affected by domestic violence received a prestigious award.

The Hearthstone Centre, run by Haringey Borough Council, was presented the Andy Ludlow Homelessness Award from the London Housing Foundation on Thursday, October 18.

The centre won for its approach supporting people affected by domestic abuse and helping them avoid becoming homeless.

Councillor Richard Watson, cabinet member for communities: “We have all been rightly proud of the innovative approach Hearthstone has pioneered in Haringey to help survivors of domestic violence.

“Violence against women is a significant cause of homelessness in London and fear of losing their home can trap women in violent situations.

“It is vital agencies find a way to work together to help women and children find a way out and rebuild their lives.”

He added it was poignant to receive the award set up in Andy Ludlow’s name as he was a much loved and respected director of housing and social services in the borough.

The centre, in Commerce Road, was established in 2004 by the council giving victims a one-stop shop to go to, making sure they were able to access all the help they needed in one place.

Hearthstone encourages greater cooperation among different agencies, including council services, police and health workers, in providing support to those affected by abuse.

With the award the Hearthstone has been given £30,000 which will go towards enhancing services at the centre.
